Minor league baseball in Las Vegas is entering its twenty-third year. Opening day is April 6th, at Cashman Field. The Las Vegas Stars and the Las Vegas 51s are the only professional sports teams to survive for many years in our valley.

Cashman Field opened with the Stars, the San Diego Padres AAA club in 1983. The Stars were the home team for 18 years, until the affiliation with the Padres came to an end.

The Los Angeles Dodgers stepped in for the 2001 season, and a new name was given to the ball team, the Las Vegas 51s. The logo is the number '51' with an alien's head in the lower half of the '5'. The alien, of course, resembles the one that is most commonly associated with the Area 51.

This year, the 51s will have a manager Jerry Royster again at the helm. He managed the Las Vegas Stars from 1996-98, those three years being the longest tenure of any AAA manager in Las Vegas.
